Fokal Haiti Relief

Support for organizations in the Southern Peninsula of Haiti

Building a better future in Haiti, one donation at a time!

On August 14, 2021, a devastating earthquake struck the southern region of Haiti, leaving more than 2,200 people dead and 2,200 wounded and destroying homes, livestock, and crops. Then came the tropical storm Grace a few days later, aggravating the devastation and suffering.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the Foundation for Knowledge and Liberty (FOKAL) and Ayiti Demen launched successful fundraising that helped provide immediate relief assistance, including food, healthcare, and shelter to nearly 23,500 families –an estimated 100,000 people– and resources to prepare the ground for a larger and longer-term recovery. The funds were channeled through a network of 31 grassroots organizations and small businesses with ground expertise and solid relationships with the impacted communities.

Undertaken and ongoing projects include rehabilitation of destroyed vineyards, relaunching coffee farming, repair of an irrigation system, a rice mill, and water cisterns, distribution of planting materials, installation of a solar pump to supply clean water to a school, and support to organizations improving women’s financial autonomy.

This year we are embarking on the second phase of the post earthquake response in southern Haiti, and the focus is now on three main areas:

  • Supporting small social enterprises to improve economic productivity and job creation.
  • Fostering a solidarity-based economy to ensure women’s financial autonomy.
  • Providing infrastructure services to help local organizations build capacity.

To achieve these, we want to raise $600,000 this year to build five (5) community centers available for local communities and organizations and provide funding to 10 small social enterprises to improve their production capacity.

Why FOKAL and Ayiti Demen?

Over its 27 years of existence, FOKAL has a long-standing experience working with local organizations in Haiti on issues ranging from education to environment and human rights, leading to real and lasting results. In 2022, FOKAL received the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity (FOKAL won the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2022 – AYITIDEMEN (ademen.org) for its work in “building a more prosperous and harmonious society” in Haiti.

FOKAL has built worldwide a strong reputation for transparency and reliability. As a member of the Open Society Foundations international network, it has proven its ability to manage significant funds, communicate, and network. As a result, FOKAL can clearly account transparently for the funds received for the post earthquake recovery program and guide local organizations in implementing sustainable projects.

Ayiti Demen is a New York-based 501c3 nonprofit eligible to receive tax-deductible donations from U.S. taxpayers.
