Martissant Park

Martissant Park

an Urban Green Oasis in port-au-prince

Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital and its largest city, is full of concrete buildings and structures, and hardly any green areas. The city like the whole country faces serious deforestation problem with severe consequences for the environment and the economic and social conditions of living.

With the help of the local community, FOKAL has transformed what used to be a wild forest frequented by gangs into a wonderland in the middle of Port-au-Prince. Martissant Park is a unique green contrast to the surrounding densely populated and built-up neighborhood, one of the poorest in the city. Visitors can enjoy the peace and beauty of nature and pay tribute to the victims of the 2010 earthquake in the memorial garden. In addition, the park offers numerous community programs and attractions, including medicinal garden of traditional Haitian plants, nursey and urban agriculture, library and community center, and playgrounds for children.

The Martissant Park offers a unique solution to urban development and environment. Spread on over 17 hectares, the park is natural preserve that sustains many unique species of fauna and flora, serves as a nature bridge between the mountain areas towering over Port-au-Prince and the sea, and offers a safe space for the community to relax, enjoy the nature amidst the urban jungle, and participate in various educational and cultural activities.

The park is a work in progress that is constantly evolving and adding new programs and activities. While the core support is provided by the Haitian government and FOKAL, more funds are needed to turn this unique space into a world-class urban park and nature reserve.
